STEELERS TRANSACTIONS

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed center/guard Nate Herbig on the injured reserve list, likely ending his 2024 season with the club.

Herbig suffered a torn rotator cuff during the final day of Steelers training camp practice at St. Vincent College last Wednesday, and has not practiced since. Head coach Mike Tomlin said after Herbig missed Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills that he was seeking a second opinion.

The Steelers have signed outside linebacker Marcus Haynes. The club also released three players from their injured reserve list with injury settlements, according to the NFL transactions page for Monday. The Steelers released cornerback Kalon Barnes, wide receiver Tarik Black and safety Nate Meadors from their injured reserve list.

The Steelers signed linebacker Kyahva Tezino. Tezino spent time with the San Francisco 49ers in training camp last year but was waived prior to the start of the regular season.

Tezino most recently was with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. He finished the UFL season with 42 total tackles, eight quarterback pressures, one sack, and three pass breakups. He is the 14th Birmingham Stallions player to get an NFL opportunity so far.

STEELERS DEPTH CHART vs Lions

THE OTHER SIDE

Lions right tackle Penei Sewell suffered a foot injury in Wednesday’s practice, but an MRI came back and revealed he is “fine,” according to ESPN, which classified it Thursday as a rolled ankle.

Running back Craig Reynolds also left Wednesday’s practice with a leg injury, but it’s not considered to be serious.

THE LAST TIME

The Steelers defeated the Lions, 19-9, in the preseason finale on Aug. 28, 2022.

Mitch Trubisky led a crisp 92-yard touchdown drive to end the first half. Trubisky’s capped the drive with a 6-yard strike to Steven Sims that gave the Steelers a 16-0 lead.

T.J. Watt suffered a left knee injury in the game after receiving a cut block from Detroit tight end T.J. Hockenson in the second quarter. Hockenson apologized to Watt immediately after the play, and Watt remained in the game briefly before being pulled.

The injury lingered into the season and Watt went underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, which delayed his return after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in the Week 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

STEELERS-LIONS SERIES

The Steelers are 17-14-2 all-time against the Lions in the regular season. The last time the two teams met in the regular season was in 2021, the infamous 16-16 tie at then-Heinz Field. Ben Roethlisberger was out with COVID and Mason Rudolph was unable to beat the 0-8 Lions.

The Steelers haven’t lost to the Lions since 1998, the Jerome Bettis controversial coin toss game on Thanksgiving.

The last time the Steelers played at Ford Field was on Oct. 29, 2017 on Sunday Night Football. Roethlisberger connected to rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster for a 97-yard touchdown in the Steelers’ 29-17 victory over Detroit.
