AT STAKE
It’s benchmark time for the Steelers, who walked into Paycor Stadium in Week 1 with their black Air Force One energy, and eked out a win over the reigning AFC champions.
Since then, the Steelers lost and got back their two best defensive players in T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick, and made a change at the most important position, turning to rookie Kenny Pickett at quarterback. Is the exchange going to result in a better performance against the Bengals this time around?
If it does, hope will remain for a second-half turnaround and a potential playoff. Spot. If not, the Steelers’ hopes for 2022 will be on thin ice.
TRANSACTIONS
The Steelers released outside linebacker Hamilcar Rashed Jr. from their practice squad and designated rookie defensive end DeMarvin Leal to return from the injured reserve list.
INJURY REPORT
CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring) is out. Expect Levi Wallace and Cam Sutton to start at outside cornerback, with Art Maulet in the slot. FS Minkah Fitzpatrick (appendix) will apparently play, just eight days after undergoing an appendectomy.
FROM THE OTHER SIDE
The Bengals are still trying to deal with the loss of wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who will miss his third game. In the first game without their prime deep threat, Cincinnati struggled to move the ball on offense against the Cleveland Browns. In the second game, they turned the whole offense over to Joe Mixon, who responded with five touchdowns. But Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd and Hayden Hurst remain talented receiving options, and if the Bengals have hopes of making it back to the Super Bowl, they will need to establish a balanced offense, with or without Chase.
