The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed cornerback Cameron Sutton to a two-year, $9 million deal on Monday.
Not only do they retain Sutton and cushion the loss of former slot corner Mike Hilton, but the Steelers also manage to work in some much-needed financial flexibility into the contract for the present.
According to Spotrac, Pittsburgh added three void years to the end of Sutton’s deal, which drops his 2021 cap hit to just $1.7 million.

Sutton will have a $5.2 million cap hit in 2022, but that will be small potatoes once the salary cap balloons following the league’s new media rights deal announced Thursday.
He will also hold a $2.1 million cap hit in 2023 after becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, Sutton has been a significant contributor for the Steelers over the last two seasons. He made six starts a season ago, demonstrating his versatility to play both outside and in the slot.
Sutton has tallied 73 total tackles, 17 passes defended and three interceptions over four years.
