UNITY TWP., Pa. — It has taken nearly the entirety of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 training camp practices to get a good read on what the teams plans are in terms of sub package defense.

But we finally got a good look at it on Wednesday, with cornerback Patrick Peterson moving into the slot in one version of the team’s five defensive back Nickel package, and Kwon Alexander staying on the field as the lone linebacker in the Dime.

Here’s how the Steelers lined up in their sub packages on Tuesday:

‘Skinny’ Nickel: Joey Porter Jr,, Patrick Peterson, Levi Wallace, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Keanu Kazee

Nickel: Peterson, Chandon Sullivan, Wallace, Fitzpatrick, Kazee

‘Heavy’ Nickel: Peterson, Neal, Wallace, Fitzpatrick, Kazee

Dime: Porter, Peterson, Neal, Wallace, Fitzpatrick, Kazee

We might get to see how the Steelers line up against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, after almost all of the first-team defensive backs missed the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Fitzpatrick, Kazee, Neal, Porter and Peterson will all be making their 2023 preseason debut if they play. But will they? Peterson said he isn’t sure if he will, but is OK with it if head coach Mike Tomlin wants him to.
