Steelers’ Colbert, Tomlin Attend Malik Willis’ Pro Day

Despite signing Mitch Trubisky to a free-agent deal, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still doing plenty of due diligence on the quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft. After flooding Kenny Pickett’s pro day at Pitt on Monday with more than a dozen staff members, the Steelers brass turned their attention to Liberty star Malik Willis.

Head coach Mike Tomlin took Willis out to dinner Monday night, Willis told reporters after Liberty’s pro day on Tuesday.

Tomlin and Kevin Colbert were also in attendance at the Flames’ pro day something that has been nearly unheard of over the years. While the Steelers’ top decision-makers almost always attend the pro days of the players they are considering for their first-round draft pick in person, that has very rarely been a small-school player.

Pittsburgh hasn’t taken a non-major conference player since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004, but it would appear that Willis is firmly on the Steelers’ radar for pick No. 20, if he gets that far.

Tomlin was one of just two head coaches (Carolina’s Matt Rhule) and Colbert one of only four general managers (Carolina, Atlanta and Washington). The Steelers also met with the Willis at the NFL Combine and the Senior Bowl.

But Willis will have to get past all of those teams to get to the Steelers, and his current NFL Mock Draft Database average position is No. 11, well ahead of where Pittsburgh picks.
