Steelers Complete Second GM Interview with VP Omar Khan

Steelers GM Omar Khan

The Pittsburgh Steelers have completed their second interview with vice president Omar Khan for their vacant general manager position, the team announced on Tuesday.

Khan, the team’s vice president of football and business administration, and pro scouting director Brandon Hunt were the only two internal candidates among the 16 that received interviews in the first phase of the team’s general manager search, and both are expected to get second interviews. The team could also choose to split the role between the two longtime staff members.

Others to get second interviews so far have been former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley, Tampa Bay Buccaneers vice president John Spytek, Tennessee Titans vice president Ryan Cowden and Philadelphia Eagles vice president Andy Weidl.

Khan has been in the Pittsburgh front office since 2001. Since 2016, he has been vice president of football and business administration. From 2011-16, he was director of football administration.

He was football administration coordinator for 2001-11, helping construct two Super Bowl winners as the team’s primary expert in matters relating to the NFL salary cap. Khan is the only candidate for the position that does not have a background in scouting or talent development.

Khan has been a general manager candidate for several other NFL teams in the past, including the Chicago Bears earlier this offseason and the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans last year.

Outgoing general manager Kevin Colbert made the decision to step down following the 2022 NFL Draft. Colbert, head coach Mike Tomlin and president Art Rooney II are all involved in the selection and interview process.

The Steelers have not announced a timeframe for making a new hire, but Tomlin’s involvement suggests that the second interviews will likely be mostly wrapped up before OTAs start on May 24.
