Steelers GM Omar Khan: Contract Talks Underway with Cam Sutton

Steelers CB Cam Sutton

INDIANAPOLIS — Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan said that the team has already begun conversations with pending free agent cornerback Cam Sutton and that the team “feels good” about the prospect of bringing him back into the fold.

Sutton, the team’s third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, has emerged as a key starter over the last two seasons. After starting eight games in his first four years with the Steelers, Sutton has started 31 over the last two years.

“We think very highly of Cam,” Khan said on Tuesday. “Conversations have commenced. We’ll see where it goes. Just like all of our free agents, everything is on the table.”

The Steelers have over a half dozen defensive regulars that are set to hit free agency in March, with Sutton joining safeties Terrell Edmunds and Damontae Kazee, linebackers Devin Bush and Robert Spillane and defensive tackles Larry Ogunjobi and Chris Wormley as potential UFAs.

He said that the team has outline priorities in the process, but declined to identify which players those are.

“We have a few guys, obviously, that we want to prioritize,” Khan said. “I’m not going to get into who is who. I feel good about where we’re at. I do like Cam a good deal.”

Sutton played the last two seasons on a two-year, $9 million contract that automatically voided earlier this month and left the Steelers with a $2.1 million dead cap hit for 2023 already.

According to Spotrac.com, Sutton should expect to receive a free agent contract in the neighborhood of $7.6 million annually this time around, though that number may be low. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell suggested on Monday that Sutton might net almost double that amount.

The Steelers have re-signed three of their own free agents so far, but all have been lower-level players on cheaper deals such.
