Steelers Daily Links: Absurd T.J. Watt Stat, Gruden as Canada Replacement?
Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette thinks Jon Gruden would be a good candidate to replace Matt Canada as the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator after the season.
During a recent chat, Dulac was asked this question: “Who do you expect realistically the Steelers to target in the off-season for their inevitable vacant OC job?”
Dulac responded: “Way too early to speculate. But a good one would be a [Mike] Tomlin friend — Jon Gruden.”
Tomlin worked for Gruden in Tampa Bay from 2002-2005 as the Buccaneers defensive backs coach. Gruden resigned as the Las Vegas Raiders head coach in October of 2021 following reports that emails he wrote over a 10-year period included racist, misogynistic and anti-gay language. Gruden has sued the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell, arguing that the emails were weaponized against him, in an effort to harm his contractual and business interests.
Gruden worked as a consultant for the New Orleans Saints during the offseason program and training camp this year. Gruden’s experience with former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was the obvious reason for the role.
? Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson revealed on the All Things Covered podcast how Mike Tomlin prepared them for thrilling win over the Baltimore Ravens. According to Peterson, Tomlin warned his team ahead of the game that the Ravens liked to play zero coverage in weighty game situations. The Steelers capitalized late in the fourth quarter with a Kenny Pickett 41-yard game-winning touchdown pass to George Pickens, attacking the Ravens’ zero coverage.
“Next think you know, you got the zero coverage, which, I don’t know why they was was pressing in zero coverage anyway,” Peterson said. “Both corners and the nickel back was pressing, they were in zero, meaning no safeties, they pretty much brought the kitchen sink, everybody’s on the island in press coverage, which is almost unheard of. But better for us than them, and we got ‘em.
“The crazy thing about that too, I’ll never forget, on Wednesday meeting, coach said, ‘when it’s a dying moment, they will try to burn the house down.’ You go back to that moment, I’ll be damned, they tried to burn the house down and we caught ‘em.”
