The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Texas A&M defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal with the No. 84 overall pick in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Leal is a 6-foot-4, 283-pound defensive tackle from San Antonio, Texas. He played three years with the Aggies, recording 133 tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 13 tackles. His most productive season as a pro came in 2021, when he had 58 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

Leal was largely considered to be a likely first- or second-round draft pick, but did not test well during the pre-draft process and saw his stock slip as a result.

The Steelers need depth and youth along an aging defensive line that played without two starters for much of the 2021 season. Leal should provide that and has the versatility to play the Steelers’ three-technique spot in their sub packages and five-technique base defensive end spot.

Leal will join Isaiahh Loudermilk, Montravius Adams Sr. and Chris Wormley as depth behind expected starters Alualu, Tuitt and Cameron Heyward. Tuitt’s status for the 2022 season is still up in the air, after he missed the 2021 season

Leal joins Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett and Georgia wide receiver George Pickens as the team’s three picks over the first two days of the draft.
