Fan Dies after Fall at Acrisure Stadium, Police Investigating

Steelers Heinz Field Acrisure Stadium

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh Steelers fan was pronounced dead at Allegheny General Hospital after they suffered an apparent fall at Acrisure Stadium following the team’s loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Public Safety Department announced on Sunday.

The incident happened near Gate C on the northwest corner of the stadium after the Jets defeated the Steelers, 24-20 and as fans were exiting the building. The fan was transported to the hospital, which is about a mile east of the stadium on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Around 4:45 p.m., EMS responded after the unidentified male fan fell from an escalator inside the stadium. The scene of the incident is being processed as a crime scene.

“We are aware of an unfortunate incident that occurred inside Acrisure Stadium today,” Steelers team spokesperson Burt Lauten said. “We are working with local authorities and helping their investigation into the matter. We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family.”

The attendance for the game was announced as 66,578. The day started cloudy and wet as the area dealt with the remnants of Hurricane Ian, but the game finished under blue, sunny skies.

Severe incidents at the 21-year-old stadium have been rare. In 2016, a Baldwin man suffered a head injury in a fight with a Dallas Cowboys fan and later died at his home. A 2016 report by the Washington Post listed then-Heinz Field as having the fifth-most arrests per game in the NFL.
