Florida Atlantic head coach Willie Taggart announced Monday that former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward has been promoted to wide receivers coach.

Ward joined the Owls’ staff as a special assistant to Taggart back in April, but was promoted following the team’s loss to Old Dominion on Saturday. He replaces Joey Thomas in his new role.

“Evaluation. Always evaluating the program and where we can get better,” Taggart said of the coaching change. “Again, we gotta get better and it’s my job to make sure that we continue to evaluate and continue to move forward. It’s something I thought would be best for us moving forward to help us.”

Prior to arriving in Boca Raton, Ward was an offensive assistant for the New York Jets under Adam Gase.

Ward is the Steelers’ all-time leader in receptions (1,000), receiving yards (12,083) and receiving touchdowns (85). He is a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion.
