Next Man Up: Free Agent, Internal Options for Steelers at Guard
Next man up: Free agent and internal options for the Pittsburgh Steelers at guard after the season-ending injury to James Daniels.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a challenge as they move forward in the 2024 season after starting guard James Daniels suffered a season-ending Achilles tear during Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.
Currently boasting a 3-1 record, the Steelers have well-positioned themselves for a playoff run thus far, but they will need to find a reliable replacement for Daniels to keep the momentum going. Compounding their difficulties, the Steelers are already without three starting offensive linemen: center Nate Herbig, who is out for the entire season due to a torn rotator cuff; tackle Troy Fautanu, who could return for the playoffs after suffering a dislocated kneecap; and guard Isaac Seumalo, who has missed the first four games of the season but is nearing a return against the Dallas Cowboys this week due to a strained pectoral muscle.
In addition to the starting lineup challenges, backup tackle Dylan Cook is currently on injured reserve with a foot injury, leaving the Steelers in a precarious position as they seek solutions on the offensive line. With the immediate need to solidify the guard position, the Steelers may explore both free-agent options and in-house alternatives.
NEXT MAN UP AT GUARD
While exploring free-agent possibilities, the Steelers may opt to utilize their current roster. With Seumalo nearing a return, he could provide a significant boost. However, if they choose to remain in-house, there are a couple of options worth noting.
Mason McCormick
The fourth-round draft pick in 2024 has shown promise in his rookie season, playing 95 snaps with one penalty and no sacks allowed, earning a PFF grade of 54.2. McCormick has displayed flashes of potential while filling in for Seumalo and could be a viable option to start.
“He has a dog mentality,” said running back Najee Harris. “He’s gonna be really good, man. I’m telling you. He’s gonna be really good.”
Spencer Anderson
Selected in the seventh round of the 2023 draft, Anderson has had 255 snaps this season, allowing one sack and committing two penalties, resulting in a PFF grade of 51.6. Although he started earlier in the season, he lost his job to McCormick this week but could be called upon again following Daniels’ injury.
Doug Nester
Currently on the practice squad, Nester, an undrafted free agent from West Virginia, has a compelling case for promotion. Last year, he played in 12 games, starting 11, and did not allow a sack during his senior season. If the Steelers choose to stay in house, it is very likely that Nester will be getting a helmet on game days.
Potential Free-Agent Guard Options
Halapoulivaati Vaitai
Vaitai could be a strong candidate for the Steelersโ guard position, given his experience and past performance. He played alongside Isaac Seumalo on the Eagles, both of whom were drafted by the Eagles in 2016, which could help build chemistry on the line. Vaitai also worked under current Steelers assistant GM Andy Weidl during his tenure with the Eagles, providing familiarity with the organizationโs philosophy. At 31 years old, he played 192 snaps for the Lions last season, recording no penalties and allowing just one sack, earning a respectable 68.3 PFF grade.
Mark Glowinski
Glowinski, who played for the New York Giants last season, could also be a consideration. He logged 521 snaps, allowing six sacks and committing four penalties, resulting in a PFF grade of 63.3. While not as strong as Vaitai, his experience could provide depth and stability.
Matt Feiler
A former Steeler, Feiler is a known commodity in Pittsburgh. Now 32, he played with the team from 2015-2020 before spending time with the Chargers and Buccaneers. Last season with Tampa Bay, he recorded 386 snaps without allowing a sack, earning a PFF grade of 54.7. His familiarity with the Steelers’ system makes him an intriguing option.
Tyre Phillips
At 27, Phillips offers a younger option who could develop into a long-term solution. Last season, he played for both the Giants and Eagles, logging 552 snaps, allowing two sacks and three penalties with a PFF grade of 59.4. His experience and potential make him a candidate worth considering.
With Daniels out for the season, the Steelers face a crucial period in their offensive line management. They have a mix of free-agent options and promising in-house talent to consider. Maintaining their winning record will hinge on making the right decisions to fortify their front five. As they prepare for the upcoming game against the Cowboys, the Steelers must weigh these choices carefully to keep the momentum rolling in the right direction.
