Steelers Have Finished Strong after 3-Game Losing Streaks under Mike Tomlin

The Steelers have shown the ability to finish their seasons strong following a three-game losing streak.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not in unfamiliar territory when it comes to their three-game losing streak. The Steelers controlled their own destiny at one point only to see the AFC North fall to, likely, the Baltimore Ravens. However, if there is a head coach who can get their team back on track, it’s Mike Tomlin.

Under Tomlin, the Steelers have posted a 49-23-1 record in the season following a three-game losing streak. In the fourth game after a three-game skid, the Steelers are 6-4, with wins in three of the last four such games.

Most recently, the Steelers bounced back from a three-game losing streak last season. The three-game winning rally throttled Pittsburgh into the postseason where they fell to Buffalo.

Prior to this season, out of the ten seasons where Tomlin’s squad faced at least one three-game losing streak, the Steelers only made the playoffs four times. This year, the Steelers clinched the postseason before their downward spiral.

With the Cincinnati Bengals rolling into town, the Steelers will have a tough challenge as the Bengals–much like the Steelers the previous three seasons–are still in the hunt requiring a win and help. The Steelers themselves could use some help. They still have a slim shot at the division, but that would require a win against the Bengals coupled with a Ravens loss–who host a lowly Cleveland Browns.

While anything is possible, it seems more likely than not that the Steelers will either open up Wild Card weekend on the road in Houston (with a win in week 18) or Baltimore (with a loss, and the Chargers win in week 18).

After being crushed by the Ravens two games ago, the Steelers might prefer to try to achieve their first postseason win in eight years in Houston. The Texans are battling injuries on offense and also were dominated by Baltimore. Pittsburgh could catch them limping into the postseason and carry momentum deeper with a win.
