Steelers Host Combine Star CB for Pre-Draft Visit

Steelers Draft Julius Brents

The Pittsburgh Steelers have scheduled a top-30 visit with NFL Combine star and Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents, according to a report by Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network.

The Steelers have gotten very familiar with Brents over the pre-draft process, meeting with him at the Senior Bowl in Mobile and at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Kansas State’s pro day is on Friday. It’s not clear if the Steelers will also be in attendance in Manhattan

The 6-foot-3, 198-pound Brents was one of the stars of the combine, posting top-flight numbers at all turns, with a 4.53-second 40-yard dahs, a 41.5-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-6 broad jump.

His measurable and athletic trains combined to give Brents a 9.99 relative athletic score, making him one of the top prospects in the entire draft class in terms of the combination of size and athleticism.

Brents also excelled in on-field drills at the Senior Bowl and brings a unique combination of experience from multiple schemes and in different passing environments. He spent his first three seasons at Iowa before transferring to Kansas State, playing in both traditional run-heavy and pass-heavy spread offensive environments.

“I’ve been in two different schemes. In the Big 10, I played more of a zone with a lot of off-man,” Brents said to Steelers Now’s Nick Farabaugh in Mobile. “Being in the Big 12 about seventy-five percent of the time, I’m all pressed up at the line, I’d say I’m real versatile and a fit for a lot of these schemes.”

Brents has been seen as a day two pick and will likely be an option for the Steelers at No. 49 overall if they don’t land a cornerback with either of their first two selections. But he has also been rising up draft boards with his impressive offseason and could go even higher than presently projected.
