The Steelers hosted center Zach Shackelford for a tryout on Friday, the second time in two weeks that the team brought in the rookie center.
Shackelford (6-foot-4, 305 pounds) is a rookie out of Texas, and previously worked out for the Steelers on Dec. 3.
He spent the offseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing as an undrafted free agent, but was waived at the end of the training camp.
The Steelers are down a pair of interior linemen, with starting left guard Matt Feiler on the injured reserve list for at least the rest of the regular season with a pectoral injury and backup Kevin Dotson missing the team’s first two practice sessions this week with a shoulder injury.
With Feiler and Dotson out on Sunday against Buffalo, backup center J.C. Hassenauer filled in at left guard. If he were to do so again on Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Steelers would be without a backup to center Maurkice Pouncey.
Guard/tackle Derwin Gray is the only other guard on the Steelers’ active roster. Guard Danny Isidora is awaiting activation after being signed from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad earlier this week. Second-year guard/tackle Anthony Coyle is on the practice squad.
