Steelers Host Mason McCormick’s College Teammate for Tryout
The Pittsburgh Steelers brought the college teammate of offensive lineman Mason McCormick in for a free agent visit on Monday, one of five offensive linemen the club tried out at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
Garrett Greenfield was McCormick’s college teammate for all six years at South Dakota State. Greenfield and McCormick both redshirted in 2018 and then both worked their way into playing time as redshirt freshman before becoming full-time starters as redshirt sophomores in 2020.
Initially, Greenfield played right tackle, but after the 2021 season, he switched to left tackle, and he spent his final two seasons with the Jackrabbits playing next to McCormick at left guard.
Together, the duo won two FCS National Championships in 2022 and 2023. Greenfield was named an FCS All-American and a First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
The 6-foot-6, 311-pound Greenfield performed well in pre-draft testing, showing explosiveness with a 38.5-inch vertical, setting the all-time NFL Combine record for an offensive lineman, and a 9-foot-5 broad jump, along with a 1.76-second 10-yard split in his 5.22-second 40-yard dash. He posted an overall Relative Athletic Score of 8.67 out of 10.
Greenfield first signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in May,and played in three preseason games with Seattle, all at left tackle. He was released by the Seahawks on Aug. 30 and signed with the New York Giants practice squad on Oct. 30. The Giants released Greenfield on Nov. 19.
In addition Greenfield, the Steelers also tried out former Dallas Cowboys guard Matt Farniok. Farniok, a Sioux Falls, South Dakota native, was a seventh-round draft pick out of Nebraska by the Cowboys in 2021. He played in 19 games and made two starts over two seasons in Dallas before he was released last August. Since then, he spent time with the Chicago Bears practice squad and was with the Detroit Lions this offseason.
The Steelers also brought in former Boston College center Alec Lindstrom, who has spent time with the Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, New York Jets and Memphis Showboats of the UFL, and former Texas Tech and Tennessee Titans guard Cole Strange.
The team does not have an immediate need along its offensive line, with eight healthy players on the 53-man roster and John Leglue, Dylan Cook and Doug Nester on the practice squad. It’s more likely that they’re trying out players for potential 2025 reserve/future contracts, which the ream can sign following the end of the regular season.
