The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted free agent quarterback Zack Annexstad for a tryout on Monday, according to a report by Aaron Wilson of KRPC-TV.

Annexstad, 24, is a rookie who originally joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent this spring. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Annexstad was waived the Buccaneers on Aug. 12 and has been a free agent ever since.

The Steelers have spent the entire 2024 regular season with just three quarterbacks in the building, with veteran Kyle Allen serving as the No. 3 behind Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Undrafted rookie John Rhys Plumlee had been with the team in training camp, but did not make the team and no quarterback has been on the practice squad all year, even when Wilson and Fields dealt with injuries.

A Norseland, Minnesota native, Annexstad first played collegiately at Minnesota from 2018-21. He earned the starting job as a true freshman, starting seven games before being limited by injury. He also missed the entire 2019 season with a foot injury suffered in practice. While he was injured, Annexstad lost his starting job to Tanner Morgan, who was with the Steelers as an undrafted quarterback in training camp in 2023.

After not appearing in either the 2020 or 2021 seasons for the Golden Gophers, Annexstad transferred to Illinois State in 2022. He spent two seasons as the Redbirds’ starting quarterback, completing 360 of 545 passes (66%) for 3,547 yards (6.5 yards per attempt), 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The Steelers could be trying out Annexstad for some extra insurance down the stretch run of the 2024 season, or they could also be interested in bringing him in for a reserve/future contract for the 2025 season.

Even though the Steelers will be playing on into the postseason, teams will be able to sign players for 2025 future contracts starting next week.
