Steelers Injury Updates: Cam Heyward Misses Practice

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers released their second injury report of the entire season, and it has some names on it that could be concerning. Larry Ogunjobi and Cam Heyward both appeared. Ogunjobi is a player of legitimate concern as he remained limited with his foot injury. But Heyward missed practice with a stomach injury.

Ogunjobi (foot) suffered the injury in training camp. He missed the team’s preseason games as a result. However, Mike Tomlin maintained the injury was minor. On Monday, Ogunjobi noted he could not control the injuries and when they occurred but felt better and ready to go.

Meanwhile, Heyward (rest/stomach) suffered an injury shortly before the final preseason game. It is unknown if this one is related to that. On Wednesday, the injury report said that Heyward was slightly limited, but it was just a rest day for a veteran. On Thursday, he did not practice at all with a stomach injury that popped up.

With Ogunjobi and Heyward banged up, expect guys like DeMarvin Leal, Keeanu Benton, Montraivus Adams, Armon Watts, and Isaiahh Loudermilk to play enough to limit some of those snaps in the rotation. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin noted that he is confident in Leal’s ability to step up if needed.

“Absolutely. I think Marv has done a really good job. We really like Marv,” Austin said. “He is a good young player and he’s still ascending. If for whatever reason, we have don’t have Larry, the I absolutely have faith in Leal.”

Tomlin did not believe there were any injury concerns on Tuesday that would constitute doubt about Sunday’s game. Ogunjobi’s injury is the only one that raises some alarm bells.

“You know, not really as I sit here today,” Tomlin said. “We had a couple of guys that were limited yesterday, but that’s more of a prudent approach on our part. We were in that phase of player development in the week and we still have Wednesday waiting on us, so we feel pretty good about player availability.”
