Ahkello Witherspoon

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon will miss the team’s Week 4 game against the New York Jets this Sunday at Acrisure Stadium with a hamstring injury, the team announced on Friday.

Witherspoon suffered the hamstring injury in the Steelers’ Week 3 game last thruway night against the Browns in Cleveland. He did not practice in any of the team’s three game-week practice sessions this week, and was officially ruled out with Friday afternoon’s injury report.

Witherspoon will likely be replaced by moving cornerback Cam Sutton permanently to the outside, with Art Maulet and Tre Norwood filling in for Witherspoon in the slot. Levi Wallace will play the other outside cornerback spot. That’s how the Steelers adjusted after Witherspoon’s injury in Cleveland.

Witherspoon is the only Steelers player with an injury designation for the game, though Sutton was added to the injury report as a limited participant on Friday with a groin injury. If Sutton cannot play, James Pierre would be the next cornerback up outside for the Steelers. Mark Gilbert was re-signed to the practice squad on Friday and could be a candidate to be a game-day elevation if the Steelers need depth at outside corner.

Guard Kevin Dotson (ankle), punter Pressley Harvin III (left hip inflammation) and free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (concussion) were all full participants in practice in all three days and are expected to be able to play fully. Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi returned to action on Friday after being given Thursday off.

The Jets have ruled out linebacker Quincy Williams with an ankle injury. Williams is New York’s starting weak-side outside linebacker. Williams suffered a high ankle sprain in the Jets’ Week 3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. A key cog in the New York defense, Williams had seven tackles before his injury on Sunday and is second among the Jets with 18 tackles this season. Veteran backup Marcell Harris is expected to start in his place.

Backup cornerback Brandin Echols is questionable with a hamstring injury. He practiced fully on Friday after being limited on Wednesday and Thursday.

Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (toe) and quarterback Zach Wilson (knee) are both expected to play after participating fully in practice Friday.
