Steelers Injury Updates: Chase Claypool among 9 Out vs. Lions

Steelers WR Chase Claypool

PITTSBURGH — Wide receiver Chase Claypool is one of eight Pittsburgh Steelers players not dressed for Sunday’s preseason finale against the Detroit Lions at Acrisure Stadium.

Claypool missed much of training camp and the Steelers’ first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks with a shoulder injury. He missed practice time his week, but said it was precautionary. His right calf was in a sleeve during warmups, but it’s unclear the reason that Claypool will miss the game.

Fullback Derek Watt will miss his third straight game with a shoulder injury. He also had been a partial returner to practice this week. Watt is in a battle to keep his special teams job.

Inside linebacker Marcus Allen took part in warmups, but came back out at game time without a helmet or shoulder pads and also appears to be out.

Joe Haeg (concussion protocol) is also not dressed. Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith (ribs) did not dress after he was focused on a Week 1 return.

Tackle Chukwuma Okorafor is suited up after missing Friday’s practice for undisclosed reasons.

Defensive tackle Montravius Adams (ankle), wide receiver Calvin Austin III (foot sprain), defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk (side) and slot cornerback Arthur Maulet (hamstring) had all previously said they would not play in the game.

Gunner Olszewski filled in for Claypool and Austin as the top slot receiver.

Cam Sutton is expected to move to slot corner to fill in for Maulet, with Levi Wallace replacing Sutton on the outside, as happened in the team’s second preseason game at Jacksonville.

Rookie DeMarvin Leal and Henry Mondeaux will be elevated to the second-team defensive line in place of Adams and Loudermilk.

Rookie tight end Connor Heyward has been working at fullback and will fill in for Watt as necessary.

Derek Tuszka and Hamilcar Rashed Jr. are expected to fill in for Highsmith at outside linebacker.
