Steelers Injury Updates: Chase Claypool, Trai Turner Expected to Practice
PITTSBURGH — Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool and guard Trai Turner are expected to practice this week as they work their way back from injuries, head coach Mike Tomlin announced on Tuesday. The status of the team’s three other injured starters is less certain.
Claypool missed the team’s game against the Detroit Lions with a toe injury suffered the week before against the Chicago Bears. Turner suffered an ankle injury against the Lions.
Tomlin said he would “always leave the light on” for outside linebacker T.J. Watt, who injured his knee and hip on the same play against the Lions. An MRI reportedly did not reveal any structural damage.
Tomlin seemed less optimistic about the fate of left guard Kevin Dotson (right high ankle sprain) and cornerback Joe Haden (left mid-foot sprain)
Ray-Ray McCloud was elevated into a more prominent role with Claypool out, and Cody White and practice squad elevation Steven Sims also earned playing time.
J.C. Hassenauer and Joe Haeg replaced Dotson and Turner at guard. B.J. Finney, who was not dressed on Sunday, would also seem to be a candidate for playing there, as Haeg is more naturally a tackle.
At outside linebacker, Taco Charlton replaced Watt and would be expected to do so again, with Derrek Tuszka also seeing playing time.
James Pierre replaced Haden at outside cornerback, with Arthur Maulet and Tre Norwood seeing increased playing time in Nickel and Dime packages.
The Steelers could also get nose tackle Carlos Davis back at practice this week. He is eligible to be designated to return from the injured reserve list on Wednesday.
