Steelers Injury Updates: DeShon Elliott Returns, Roman Wilson Step Forward
Pittsburgh Steelers Injury Updates: Strong safety DeShon Elliott returned to practice and wide receiver Roman Wilson continues to progress.
UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers are relatively healthy entering their preseason opener with the Houston Texans on Friday, though four players did not participate in Thursday’s walkthough and their status should be considered doubtful for the 7 p.m. Friday game at Acrisure Stadium. But the team did get good news about strong safety DeShon Elliott.
Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith is one of seven Steelers already ruled out of the game by head coach Mike Tomlin during his press conference on Wednesday. Highsmith missed his second consecutive practice with a groin injury that he suffered on Tuesday. He was at practice, but did not participate.
Wide receiver Roman Wilson still has yet to return to practice after spraining his ankle last Tuesday. He was at practice, and not in uniform, but he no longer had any kind of visible brace or wrap on his injured left ankle. After he first was hurt, he was in a walking boot, and the last few days, he’s had a black wrap around his ankle, but he appeared to be unhindered on Thursday. It’s possible he could be ready to start doing physical work after the Steelers return from their preseason opener.
Nose tackle Breiden Fehoko was not seen around the practice fields after suffering a shoulder or arm injury in practice on Wednesday, and is probably out for Friday night.
Markus Golden also didn’t practice for the second straight day. He was in attendance, but did not work on Wednesday. That first appeared to be a veteran day off, but he was not seen at practice on Thursday, bringing his health into question. Head coach Mike Tomlin did not speak to the media on Thursday.
Elliott appears to have avoided serious injury after he left the practice fields on a cart on Wednesday. He was right back in action on Thursday, though whether or not he’ll suit up against Houston remains in question.
