Steelers Kicker Chris Boswell Wins NFL Honor
Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month, the league announced on Thursday. During the month of October, Boswell was 12-for-12 on field goal attempts and 10-for-10 on extra points.
Boswell also received the league honor in September. He’s well on his way to being a first-team All-Pro. He is 23 of 24 on field goal attempts this season. His only miss was a 62-yarder in the Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
“We have a program that we follow,” Steelers special teams coordinator Danny Smith said. “[Boswell] and I communicate on that. He has input as well, as all players do. I’m not saying I’ll do it, but I’ll listen. We arrive at a program. It’s been very good and it’s working. We’ve done some different things the last two years. We don’t kick 48 hours before game anymore. We started that last year.
“He and I work through those things, and it’s been a real good relationship and he’s really playing well.”
Since joining the Steelers in 2015, Boswell is 254-289 on field goal attempts (87.0%). Boswell was 3 of 3 in Monday night’s 26-18 win over the New York Giants, converting from 31, 25 and 27 yards out.
This is the third time Boswell has won AFC Special Teams Player of the Month. In addition to winning the award in September, he won it in December/January of 2015.
Boswell was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week 1 after making six field goals, three 50 yards or more, in the Steelers’ 18-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Boswell was a perfect 6 of 6 on field goal attempts against Atlanta, marking the third time in his career that he went 6 of 6 in a game.
Boswell nailed kicks from 57, 56, 51, 44, 40 and 25 yards out against Atlanta. Boswell is the first Steelers kicker to make three field goals of 50+ yards in a game in franchise history, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Boswell was also the first kicker to make at least five 40-yard field goals in a game since he accomplished the feat in 2016 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
