Steelers Lose Two to Injuries in Loss vs. Cowboys
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebackers Nick Herbig (hamstring) and DeMarvin Leal (neck, stinger) both suffered injuries and did not return in Sunday night’s 20-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Head coach Mike Tomlin provided a brief update after the game.
“Had some injuries in play,” Tomlin said. “Nick Herbig got a hamstring. DeMarvin Leal got a neck injury of some kind that’s being evaluated. Don’t have a lot of information on that. And that’s where it is.”
Herbig suffered a hamstring injury late in the third quarter. He appeared to be in significant pain, walking gingerly into the locker room. Leal suffered the neck stinger on the following drive.
Jeremiah Moon was the Steelers only outside linebacker left in the game at one point, as T.J. Watt was getting evaluated in the medical tent. The Steelers were already thin at outside linebacker with Alex Highsmith (groin) ruled out for Sunday night’s game.
The Steelers moved defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk to outside linebacker to fill in for Watt on a drive in the fourth quarter. Watt returned on the following possession.
The Steelers announced multiple roster moves on Saturday ahead of the Week 5 matchup at home against the Cowboys. Among those moves, the Steelers activated Moon from the injured reserved/designated to return list.
Moon, who was originally an undrafted free agent out of Florida, signed with the Baltimore Ravens his rookie season where he spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He spent his rookie season on the practice squad before seeing his first extended play time last year.
The Steelers are decimated at the outside linebacker position, and Highsmith is not expected to be back until the Week 7 game against the New York Jets. Herbig and Leal’s status will be something to monitor this week leading up to the game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
