Steelers Making Plans to Hold Training Camp at Heinz Field

The Steelers are making plans to hold their training camp at Heinz Field, team spokesperson Brett Lauten announced on Monday.

The team will not be permitted by the NFL’s coronavirus reopening plan to hold training camp at St. Vincent College near Latrobe, Pa., as the team has since 1966.

Outside of their annual trip to Latrobe, the Steelers have held all of the rest of their practices and workouts at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the city’s South Side since that facility opened in 2000.

In recent years, the team has held one training camp practice at Heinz Field, opening it to the public for fans closer to the city. That’s the only time other than game days that the team has utilized Heinz Field.

Now, the team may be taking 91 players, coaches and staff to the facility for several weeks. The team traditionally reports to training camp in late July and remains sequestered in Latrobe until about the second week of the preseason.
