Steelers Won’t Fire or Trade Mike Tomlin, NFL Insider Says
The calls to fire Mike Tomlin have become much louder in the last week after two straight losses from the Steelers to 2-10 teams. But if there is one thing that the Steelers might not do, it’s move on from Tomlin, who has become the face of the franchise and an iconic part of the standard. But things could be spiraling that way and out of control.
Even if they do not fire him, a trade could be possible for a head coach whom multiple NFL teams would covet. Could that even happen? According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, you probably should not get your hopes up for a different coach on the Steelers’ sideline in 2024.
“Put it this way, Rich, I would be shocked if the Steelers fired Mike Tomlin,” Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show. “I would certainly be surprised if they would even consider a trade of Mike Tomlin.”
Tomlin has struggled to keep the Steelers afloat over the last five days. There was a full-blown change of tide. After using their formula to beat several good teams earlier in the year, the Steelers didn’t do anything right in consecutive losses to 2-10 teams over the last five days. Instead of doing enough to get by, the Steelers didn’t do enough to do almost anything right.
The Steelers are broken right now. It’s hard to imagine that they’ll salvage the season and make a playoff push after losing to bottom feeders like the Cardinals and Patriots. Their final four games are against Indianapolis (7-5) on the road, Cincinnati (6-6), at Seattle (6-6) and at Baltimore (9-3). The Steelers could easily lose the final four games (six overall) and finish 7-10, marking the first losing season for Tomlin in his career and the first for Pittsburgh since 2003. It remains to be seen if that will happen, but it’s very much on the radar. But that does not mean change is inevitably coming.
