reported the news on Friday that the Steelers reached an agreement with Edmunds on a new contract. Ian Rapport of NFL Network https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1517599679277678594?s=20&t=J0D4p-95PF98ajZbNicxyw”>then
reported that the deal’s length of one-year and a salary of $2.5 million. The Steelers confirmed this news, but did not disclose the financial terms of the contract.
Edmunds, who has been a starter in Pittsburgh for four years, will come back into the fold with 60 games of starting experience with the Steelers. It will keep the secondary mostly together as a result, and the safety duo of Edmunds and Minkah Fitzpatrick will stay together for the fourth season in a row.
Drafted with the 28th overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Edmunds was a stunning first-round pick for the Steelers. However, he quickly became a starter and has since become entrenched at strong safety. Edmunds’ fifth-year option was declined prior to last year. Still, he has found his way back to Pittsburgh for the time being.
Over his career, Edmunds has five career interceptions, 21 pass deflections, 12 tackles for loss, and 340 tackles as the starting strong safety for the Steelers. He has played at strong safety, free safety, sub-package linebacker, and in the slot since being drafted by the Steelers.
Continuity will be helpful for the Steelers on the back end as they return Ahkello Witherspoon and Cam Sutton as well. Four of the five core players in the secondary will return. Still, given it is a one-year deal, this can not take the Steelers out of the pursuit for a safety in the draft.
Pittsburgh has shown interest in Lewis Cine, Kyle Hamilton, Daxton Hill, Jaquan Brisker, Bryan Cook, Nick Cross, and others this draft season. Edmunds may be a bridge option for Pittsburgh while one of the names above develops for a season under his tutelage.
Still, for Edmunds, he will only be 26 years old next offseason, so there is plenty of time to still cash in with a breakout 2022 campaign. He will be looking to do just that to get a big contract.
