Joey Porter Jr. Watch? Steelers Send Austin, Brown, Weidl to Penn State Pro Day
STATE COLLEGE, Pa — The Steelers sent a strong contingent to Penn State pro day, including assistant general manager Andy Weidl and secondary coach Grady Brown.
The full contingent, which includes Weidl, Brown, tight end Coach Alfredo Roberts, and defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, is heavily focused on defense and position groups. However, Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan were notably absent after having been on the road since Monday of this week.
Still, with key players such as safety Ji’Ayir Brown and cornerback Joey Porter Jr., the secondary focused group inhttps://twitter.com/farabaughfb/status/1639284840162906114?s=46&t=2jpDbud8ucO9ohwg8UK6iA”>
State College is notable. It certainly seems that the Steelers have plenty of interest in both defensive backs as they get ready to work out at pro day.
Tomlin and Khan hit the road to Iowa, Iowa State, Ohio State, and Alabama this week. Notre Dame pro day is on Friday as well, and that could be where both went for Friday to see players such as Michael Mayer and Isaiah Foskey.
Roberts is here to watch tight end Brenton Strange. Pat Freiermuth, of course, is from Penn State, and the Nittany Lions have produced a litany of players out of the program at the tight end position in their history. With Zach Gentry still on the market, Pittsburgh has seemingly been looking at some tight ends.
Porter Jr. is the main attraction here, though. The son of former Steelers outside linebacker Joey Porter, Porter Jr. has received considerable buzz to Pittsburgh throughout the entire process. He reiterated his hopes in Indianapolis.
“It would probably mean a lot for me and my family,” Porter Jr said. “I’ve been in the Pittsburgh area for a while now, so staying in the Pittsburgh area, home, it would mean a lot.”
Back in the day, Porter Jr. would run around with Tomlin’s sons, Mason and Dino, and get work in off to the side while his dad practiced. Meanwhile, Tomlin would coach the practices with the kids running wild in the background.
