The Steelers have placed inside linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III on the injured reserve list, ending his regular season, the team announced on Friday.

Gilbert suffered an ankle injury in the Steelers’ Week 15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. Gilbert was able to return to the game, but did not practice in any of the team’s sessions this week leading up to the team’s game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Gilbert will have to spend at least three weeks on the injured reserve list, meaning he will miss the rest of the regular season and the Steelers’ first-round playoff game.

This is Gilbert’s second trip to the injured reserve this season. He was first placed on IR on Nov. 4 with a back injury and returned on Dec. 12. He’s played in just four games this season, mostly on special teams, recording five tackles. He had a season-high four tackles at Buffalo on Dec. 13.

Gilbert’s rookie season was also interrupted by injury. He played in just seven games in 2019 before missing the rest of that season with a back injury. The 6-foot, 230-pound linebacker was the Steelers’ sixth-round pick out of Akron in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Steelers evened their roster by placing Gilbert on the injured reserve list after adding fellow inside linebacker Vince Williams to the active roster from the COVID-19 reserve list earlier this week.
