UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers had their sixth training camp practice of 2024 on Sunday at St. Vincent College, and Alan Saunders of Steelers Now were there to break it all down.
The Steelers got back to the physicality with another padded practice on Wednesday, and that physicality spilled over from in between the whistles to outside of them — more than once.
The big hit came at the end of practice, when Elandon Roberts hit Justin Fields, Mason McCormick took a running charge at Roberts and all hell broke loose.
Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the over-abundance of physicality in his post-practice press conference.
“We got a little bit less than professional and chippy today. It’s an opportunity to teach and learn.”
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin was more elaborative:
“It got a little feisty, but that’s camp. We’ve just got to learn. We want to be aggressive. We want to be physical. But you have to keep your cool. … It’s a good teaching moment for us. I like the competitiveness. I like the fire. But you have to understand that you can’t fight.”
Elsewhere, Calvin Austin III impressed in wide receiver vs. cornerback 1-on-1s while diminutive Beanie Bishop took on George Pickens and held his own.
Finally, two outside linebackers left practice with injuries, opening a potential hole in the defense.
