Steelers Practice Report: WRs Stepping Up, First Look at Kickoff

Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin III look like they can hold the fort at WR. First look at new kickoff play.

Steelers Practice Report

UNITY TWP., Pa. —The Pittsburgh Steelers had their seventh training camp practice of 2024 on Sunday at St. Vincent College, and Alan Saunders and Derrick Bell of Steelers Now were there to break it all down.

There has been plenty of trepidation among Steelers fans about what the team might do with Roman Wilson out multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain, but Van Jefferson had his best day of training camp on Thursday and Calvin Austin III has looked like a different player all season long. Jefferson got a touchdown in seven shots and also hauled in a deep ball from Justin Fields. So did George Pickens, who has been limited to mostly working inside the hashes so far as the defense has focused on trying to take him away. Between the elevated play of the rest of the first team and the ability to move Pickens around the formation, the Steelers’ wide receiver situation might not be as bleak as it seems.

Elsewhere, we got our first look at the new kickoff rules in practice, with Jaylen Warren returning kicks as a bit of a surprise.

Finally, DeMarvin Leal, Anderson Hardy and Logan Lee were in the center of another practice brawl as the Steelers kept things physical, even without pads.

All that and more in today’s Steelers practice report.
