The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed running back Aaron Shampklin to their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.

Shampklin had been waived by the team on Monday, and cleared waivers on Tuesday. The 25-year-old running back has been with the Steelers since January. He spent the entire offseason, training camp and preseason with the club, and was part of the final cut-down to 53 players at the end of August.

The Steelers re-signed Shampklin to the practice squad and he played one game as a practice squad elevation before being signed to the active roster on Oct. 2.

Shampklin was elevated as the team was going through a number of injuries as the running back position, with both Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson missing time. Warren has now played three games since returning from his knee sprain, and Patterson appears set to return from his ankle injury after the bye.

Shampklin played in three games, rushing six times for 17 yards. He also played on 13 snaps of special teams.

Shampklin was was replaced on the team’s 53-man roster by veteran running back Jonathan Ward. Ward had exercised all of his three practiced squad elevations and was required to be promoted in order to play on Monday Night Football against the New York Giants.

A 24-year-old Harvard alum, Shampklin made his NFL debut in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts. The Paramount, California native first signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Gamblers of the USFL before catching on with the Steelers in January.

In three preseason games for the Steelers this season, Shampklin ran 13 times for 40 yards and caught three passes for three yards. After being released in the final round of cuts in late August, Shampklin did not make the team’s initial practice squad, but he was re-signed to the practice squad on Sept. 4 after Boston Scott suffered an injury.
