The Steelers have re-signed offensive tackle and occasional extra tight end Zach Banner to a one-year, $1.75 million contract, according to Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot.
Banner, 26, was a restricted free agent and the first of the Steelers’ RFA to sign a contract with the team, eliminating the need for the tender process. He had been playing under a two-year, $1.2 million contract.
Banner joined the Steelers in 2018 after spending his first season-plus out of USC split between three teams.
He grew into a significant role with the team in 2019, serving not only as a backup tackle but as the team’s third tight end, and became a fan favorite as his No. 72 was repeatedly reported for lining up in an eligible position.
In 2019, Banner played in 14 of the Steelers’ 16 games and even made a start. He played in eight games with Cleveland in 2017.
With the retirement of left guard Ramon Foster, Banner could be in line for a greater role in 2020, either at guard, where he has played in the past, or at right tackle if starter Matt Feiler makes the shift to replace Foster.
