PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have released running back Pete Guerriero, the team announced on Tuesday.
Guerriero, 22, signed with the Steelers late in training camp on Aug. 8, as the team dealt with injuries to backs Benny Snell Jr. and Kalen Ballage.
He played in just one preseason game for the Steelers, in Week 1 at the Philadelphia Eagles, when he rushed seven times for 20 yards.
Guerriero, split 2020 season between the practice squads of the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets. He re-signed a future contract with the Jets for the 2021 season, but was released on May 13.
A 5-foot-10, 190-pound Lyndhurst, New Jersey native, Guerriero attended Monmouth on a track scholarship before joining the football team. With the Hawks, he rushed for 900 yards on more in all three seasons as a contributor, including a 1,995-yard season as a redshirt junior in 2019 that set a new school record. Guerriero was an FCS All-American and FCS Running Back of the Year.
Guerriero was one of five players the Steelers cut from their active roster, as part of an NFL-mandated cut-down from 85 players to 80 on Tuesday. Inside linebacker Calvin Bundage, offensive lineman Aviante Collins and wide receiver Tyler Simmons were all released.
Defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr. was waived/injured.
