Steelers Release Promising Edge Rusher
The Pittsburgh Steelers are reeling off of a 32-13 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The Steelers now turn their attention to the New York Jets for their second Sunday Night Football game in two weeks. On Monday, the Steelers announced few roster moves including a cut from their active roster.
Among these moves, the Steelers announced the release of Ade Ogundeji in a surprising move. Ogundeji made his Steelers debut in Sunday’s game against the Raiders. He only registered a pass deflection on 16 defensive snaps. He had been elevated to the active roster on Saturday ahead of the trip out to Las Vegas.
Ogundeji, originally from Michigan, played 3 seasons for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish before declaring for the NFL Draft. He was picked by future Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith–then head coach of the Atlanta Falcons–with the 182nd pick of the 2021 NFL draft. He spent the 2021 season into the 2024 preseason with the Falcons where he would register 75 tackles, 3 sacks, and 8 tackles for loss.
The Steelers would sign Ogundeji to their practice squad following roster cuts at the end of the 2024 preseason. It remains unclear if he will return to the practice squad. This could mean Alex Highsmith’s return is on the horizon.
