The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived veteran running back Jonathan Ward, the team announced on Saturday.

Ward had been playing a key special teams role for the Steelers in recent weeks, in addition to serving as the team’s third running back. With veteran kickoff returner and No. 3 running back Cordarrelle Patterson expected to return to the lineup this week for the Steelers against the Washington Commanders, Ward was no longer needed on the 53-man roster.

Ward first joined the Steelers on a veteran tryout contract back during rookie minicamp. He impressed with his blocking ability and versatility, first earning a contract and then a spot on the team’s practice squad with another strong showing at training camp.

When the Steelers had to deal with injuries to both Patterson and Jaylen Warren in the early part of the season, the team called on Ward, first as a practice squad elevation and then by signing him to the active roster after he had used the maximum three practice squad elevations.

In total, Ward has played in four games for the Steelers. He’s seen just 10 snaps of offense, running the ball five times for 22 yards. His more significant contributions have been as a part of the Steelers’ league-best special teams units. Ward has been playing a role on kickoff, kick return, punt and punt return units for the Steelers, earning a season-high 19 reps in the team’s last game against the New York Giants in Week 8.

The Steelers released Ward and safety Terrell Edmunds on Saturday to make room for Tyler Matakevich and Ben Skowronek, who were reinstated from the injured reserve list. Matakevich and Skowronek are both core special teamers.

Ward will now be subject to waivers. If he clears, he will be free to sign with any team, or return to the Pittsburgh practice squad.
