Steelers Rookie WR Is Feeling Better Than He Has ‘In A long Time’
Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson has spent most of his rookie year on IR, but he's ready to make an impact now that he's fully healthy.
PITTSBURGH — Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson has spent most of his rookie season nursing ankle and hamstring injuries, but after getting back on the practice field Tuesday, he’s feeling more confident than ever.
On Wednesday, Wilson revealed that not only does he feel like he’s finally fully healthy, but that he’s feeling the best he has in a long time.
“I feel really good. My body feels better than it’s ever felt in a long time,” Wilson said. “Mentally … just focused, determined. I got a lot of expectations for myself, and I got a lot of things I got to do to be able to reach those goals.”
That’s great news after what has been a difficult rookie year for him. He suffered a high ankle sprain on the third day of training camp, which sidelined him for the rest of camp, all of the preseason, and the first five weeks of the regular season. Then when he finally got to play in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders, he suffered a hamstring injury that landed him on injured reserve.
That doesn’t mean Wilson will be back on the field playing meaningful snaps for the Steelers, however. Head coach Mike Tomlin has long preached how difficult it is to hop on a moving train and the train is far from the station with just one week left in the regular season.
That’s why Wilson is solely focused on things he can control.
“Every day, I’m just trying to do everything I can to be a better football player, better person, and just grow,” Wilson said. “That’s all I’m really focused on. Whenever I’m ready, I’ll be ready. I trust in these coaches, and I believe in the plan.”
While Wilson was working his way back from his injuries this season, he had a lot of time to get acclimated to the mental part of the NFL. That included learning from the veterans around him on how to better take care of his body.
“Just giving me a lot of advice. They’re all great leaders in there,” Wilson said. “They’re great teammates to have and I love them to death for that. They’ve all been supporting me, and it’s really been a blessing to be able to watch them. They’re all great athletes.”
Hopefully Wilson learned as much as he could from them so that when his time comes to make an impact on offense, it’s not so short-lived once again.
It remains to be seen when that time will come, but until it does, Wilson will continue to find ways to improve himself and his game.
“Getting a better routine, trying to solve problems and look for more problems,” Wilson said. “Like coach T. says, ‘Try to find new problems to fix.’ Just build on that.”
