PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was taken to a local hospital for observation after suffering an undisclosed injury in the second half of his team’s 26-22 win over the Cleveland Browns on Monday.

Fitzpatrick was injured in the third quarter while making a touchdown-saving tackle on a 69-yard run by Browns running back Jerome Ford.

He took himself out of the game and was seen vomiting on the Pittsburgh sideline before he was taken down the tunnel to the locker room. Head coach Mike Tomlin said after the game that Fitzpatrick was being evaluated at a hospital for a chest injury

“I do not (know),” Tomlin said when asked the specific nature of the injury. “I just know that he’s being evaluated as we speak. I’m sure I’ll have more information for you guys when we talk around noonish tomorrow.”

In addition to Fitzpatrick, the Steelers had two other regulars go down with injuries in the game.

Wide receiver and kick returner Gunner Olszewski suffered a concussion in the first quarter and did not return.

Inside linebacker Elandon Roberts returned to the game after being sidelined by a stinger.

Fitzpatrick’s potentially serious injury could leave the Steelers without two of their big three defensive stars for the time being. Defensive tackle Cam Heyward is expected to miss seven more weeks after core muscle surgery.

Unlike last week, when the Steelers had an extra day to prepare after injuries to Heyward and wide receiver Diontae Johnson, this week’s game plan will need to be done with one day less than usual.

“We’ve got to assess all of those things and put together a plan on a short week,” Tomlin said.
