PITTSBURGH — It was the first day of offseason training activities for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, and that meant Russell Wilson and Justin Fields taking the field for the first time in a Pittsburgh uniform. Wilson and Fields built their chemistry with running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends. An entirely new quarterback room and a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith will naturally change how things operate and look in the Steelers offense.
Fields were acquired by trade with the Chicago Bears for a sixth-round pick that could become a fourth-round pick if Fields plays so many snaps. Meanwhile, Wilson was released by Denver, who swallowed a record-setting cap hit to offload Wilson, and he will now come to the Steelers in ‘pole position’ as the team’s first quarterback as it stands.
However, Mike Tomlin has remained adamant that Fields will have his chance to compete, which could change how things operate in that room. Thus, this is the likely start of a Summer-long quarterback battle to decide who the starting quarterback will be for the Steelers, with Wilson holding the upper hand to begin due to his veteran capabilities. Here is how Russell Wilson and Justin Fields looked on their first day at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
