Steelers Sights and Sounds: The Calm Before The Storm

UNITY TWP, Pa. —  There was a calm feeling on the campus of St. Vincent’s College on Saturday. This could have been a combination of a couple things for the Steelers – fatigue from the late practice the night before or the realization camp is almost over.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS

Head coach Mike Tomlin took it relatively easy on his team on Saturday, as players did not wear pads during practice for the first time since the opening weekend of camp. Despite the less physical practice, coaches still made sure players were focused and working on their craft. Tight end Xavier Grimble caught balls from the machine, several linebacker completed a typical drill and team leaders like Joe Haden helped others remain active.

SEVEN SHOTS

For the second straight day Ben Roethlisberger did not take part in the “seven shots” team activity. With no word on any injury, it’s still believed to be simply some rest for the veteran. This once again provided an opportunity for Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs to get work with the first team offense. JuJu Smith-Schuster extended his body to catch a touchdown pass from Rudolph in the corner of the end-zone. Rudolph went 3 for 4 on throws.

In addition to JuJu, Donte Moncrief stood out as top target. Dobbs flashed his athleticism, which is that one aspect of his game that can’t be taught, by keeping the ball and running it in for a score. Dobbs finished 3 for 3 through the air.

INJURY UPDATES

Rookie receiver Dionte Johnson did not practice after tweaking a hamstring last night in Latrobe. T.J. Watt, who Mike Tomlin opened camp by announcing he would be placed on the “physically unable to perform” list with a hamstring tightness, was once again held out of practice. Vince Williams and Artie Burns did not practice.
