Steelers Sights and Sounds: T.J. Watt Mentors Nick Herbig
UNITY TWP., Pa — Nick Herbig has been a standout star of training camp so far, but T.J. Watt is looking at his fellow outside linebacker and Wisconsin Badger as a guy who could be so much more than he is right now.
Nick Herbig has been a guy who has dominated practices so far, no matter who he has gone up against. With or without pads, his explosiveness and bend seem to shine. That is something that not many saw coming, but Herbig is proving he has some serious chops to his pass-rushing skill. So, with a new ghost move that T.J. Watt taught him, Herbig is now using that along with his rip and dip to terrorize offensive tackles.
Herbig’s burst was something that stood out to me the first time I saw him. He’s light and in run drills will probably struggle. But he’s a specific sub-package edge rusher right now who could be a boon in specific situations. I do wonder if they try to cross-train him at off-ball linebacker at some point, but for right now, Herbig is making his niche look plausible on the team. Watt is aiding in that all becoming a reality and making Herbig an outlier.
