PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Williams and outside linebacker Preston Smith had his their first practice with the team at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Wednesday after joining the club during a trade deadline deal on Tuesday from the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers, respectively.
Williams worked in blocking drills — one of his specialties — behind starters George Pickens and Calvin Austin III under the instruction of Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni.

Smith also had his first practice with the team on Wednesday, and he was joined by a welcome sight in the rotation, as Nick Herbig participated in practice for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury. Smith came over from the Green Bay Packers in a trade deadline deal on Tuesday, but the veteran of a 3-4 defense in Green Bay similar to the Steelers’ shouldn’t have much in the way of acclamation time. Outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin praised Smith for his early work on Wednesday.
Herbig has been out since he was injured in the first half of the Steelers’ Week 5 loss the Dallas Cowboys. He said earlier this week that he hopes to return to action this week.
