PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers were without star wideout George Pickens for the second consecutive practice on Thursday, and an interesting name went through the group’s drill circuit at the head of the line: third-year slot man Calvin Austin III.

Van Jefferson and Mike Williams are long-established NFL players, but Austin is the one that has been the on the Steelers the longest, and he has the most receiving yards this season of the group of Pittsburgh WRs that will be tasked with replacing Pickens for the second straight week against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday.

On defense, the safeties group was once again without DeShon Elliott, who suffered a hamstring injury against the Cleveland Browns last week and did not practice on Wednesday. This time around, Cam Sutton joined the safeties group. The veteran defensive back has played safety in the past, but not much this season. If he’s getting ready to be a backup there, that seems like a bad sign for Elliott’s chances of getting back into the mix by Sunday.
