Steelers Sign Ex-Chargers OLB Emeke Egbule to Practice Squad
The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed outside linebacker Emeke Egbule to their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.
Egbule, 26, has been a free agent since being released by the Los Angeles Chargers back at the end of training camp. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound linebacker was originally the Chargers’ sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and he played 32 games over the last three seasons for the Chargers, recording 13 tackles and two quarterback hits. Most of his contributions for Los Angeles came on special teams.
Before signing with the Steelers, Egbule agreed to play for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL next spring.
A Topeka, Kansas native, Egbule played his college football at Houston, where he had 162 tackles and 13 tackles for a loss in his four seasons with the Cougars.
The Steelers have been dealing with another injury to star outside linebacker T.J. Watt. After dealing with a torn pectoral muscle and arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this season, Watt has been limited by a rib injury since his return to the lineup. He is expected to miss portions of the team’s practices for the third consecutive week this week.
Malik Reed and Jamir Jones are the backup outside linebackers on the 53-man roster. Egbule will join David Anenih as depth available from the practice squad.
To make room for Egbule on the 16-man practice squad roster, the Steelers released running back Master Teague. Teague had been added while the Steelers were dealing with injuries to running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, but both players played in Sunday’s win over the Atlanta Falcons.
