The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson to a future contract for the 2025 season, according to his agency, Sports Trust.

Thompson, 27, spent his first three NFL seasons with the Dolphins after they drafted him in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Kansas State.

Serving mostly as the team’s third-string quarterback behind starter Tua Tagovialoa and backups Teddy Bridgewater, Mike White and Tyler Huntley, Thompson appeared in 10 games over the last three seasons, making three starts.

Thompson played in seven games in 2022, and made two starts, finishing with 60 completions on 105 attempts, one touchdown and three interceptions for a 62.2 passer rating. Thompson also appeared in one postseason game in 2022, throwing for 220 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in a Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills. He did not appear in a regular season game in 2023.

This past season, Thompson played in three games and made one start, against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 22. He finished the year having completed 21 of 33 passes for 187 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and a 78.7 passer rating. Thompson was waived by Miami on Dec. 14 and re-signed to the practice squad.

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Thompson spent six seasons at Kansas State, spending four of them as the team’s primary starting quarterback. After redshirting in 2016 and playing as a backup in 2017, he assumed the starter’s mantle in 2018. A serious injury limited him to just three games in 2020, but he returned for a sixth season in 2021.

Thompson’s most productive collegiate season came in 2019, when he started 13 games and threw for 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran 114 times for 405 yards and 11 more touchdowns.

The Steelers did not have a single quarterback under contract for the 2025 season before signing Thompson, as Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Kyle Allen are all set to hit free agency this March. The Steelers did not have another quarterback on their roster at any point of the 2024 season.
