The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Philadelphia Eagles slot cornerback Josiah Scott to the team’s practice squad, the team announced on Thursday.
Scott, 24, was waived by the Eagles on Tuesday and cleared waivers on Wednesday. He is the first player the Steelers have added to their practice squad that was in training camp with another NFL team this summer.
He is also the third Steelers addition to their secondary since the club made it’s initial 53-man roster. The Steelers have also signed versatile cornerback Desmond King, likely to be in the mix as the starting slot cornerback soon.
Scott will be joining former Dallas Cowboys starting outside cornerback Anthony Brown on the practice squad. Brown is returning from an Achilles injury.
Scott will be more of a slot option, where he played 328 of his 390 snaps with the Eagles in 2022. Scott also played about 47 snaps of safety, so has some position flexibility in that regard.
A 5-foot-9, 185-pound defensive back, Scott was a, fourth-round pick out of Michigan State by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020. He played in six games with the Jags as a rookie, but the following May was traded to the Eagles for Jameson Houston.
With Philly, Scott played in 13 games in 2021, mostly on special teams. He played 171 snaps of special teams and 90 snaps of defense, finishing the season with 12 tackles in all situations, one sack, one tackle for loss and one quarterback hurry.
His role grew significantly in 2022, as he played in 16 of 17 games and made four starts. He finished the season with 26 tackles, two tackles for a loss, eight passes defended and two interceptions.
The Steelers also announced the signings of wide receiver Simi Fehoko, tackle Kellen Diesch and guard Joey Fisher to the practice squad, bringing that unit to 13 of the maximum of 16 players.
