PITTSBURGH — With the 2023 NFL Draft in full swing, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan wasn’t singularly focused on how to improve his team.
In the middle of Saturday’s seventh round, the Steelers signed free agent cornerback Chandon Sullivan, according to his agency, Katz Brothers Sports. Terms of the contract were not revealed.
Sullivan, 26, is a five-year NFL veteran. The 5-foot-11, 189-pound cornerback first joined the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent from Georgia State in 2018, where he played for current Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl.
After one year in Philadelphia, Sullivan found a home with the Green Bay Packers from 2019-21 and became a starter in 2020 and 2021 as a slot cornerback. He moved on to the Minnesota Vikings in 2022, where he again started and played alongside current Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson.
Over the last five seasons, Sullivan has played 2,166 snaps in the slot, compared to just 226 outside, according to PFF.
In 2021 with Green Bay, Sullivan had a career high three interceptions and four passes defended. In 2022, he had seven passes defended and 60 tackles, both career highs.
The Steelers have a need for a coverage-first slot cornerback, following the departure of Cam Sutton via free agency. The Steelers did draft one cornerback in the 2023 NFL Draft, but second-rounder Joey Porter Jr. has only played outside.
With Sullivan paired with run-focused slot man Arthur Maulet, and the outside quintet of Porter, Peterson, Akhello Witherspoon and Levi Wallace, the Steelers seem to have secured their cornerback room for the 2023 season.
