The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing free agent wide receiver Scotty Miller to a one-year contract, according a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Miller, 26, played for the Atlanta Falcons under new Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in 2023, becoming the fourth player that played for Smith in Atlanta last year to join the Steelers for 2024.
Miller is 5-foot-9 and 174-pounds. With the Falcons last season, he was the No. 5 wide receiver option in terms of targets. Miller played in all 17 games and was targeted just 16 times, catching 11 of them for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite his small stature, Miller has spent most of his career playing outside receiver, and not in the slot. The Steelers have a need for an outside receiver to pair with George Pickens, though Miller’s history does not suggest he would be a better option than already-signed Van Jefferson for that role.
Before signing with Atlanta in 2023, Miller spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him out of Bowling Green in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
He played in 10 games and Mae two starts as a rookie in 2019, and saw his workload increase in 2020, when he started five games, played in all 16 and caught 33 passes for a career-high 501 yards and two touchdowns.
Miller missed a big chunk of the 2021 season with turf toe, and ever seemed to regain his previous level of production. He caught just five passes in nine games that season, In 2022, he played in 15 games and made one start. Miller was targeted 40 times, but caught just 23 for 185 yards, an average of 8 yards per catch.
Miller impressed at this pro day in the pre-draft process, running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and a 4.02-second short shuttle, both considered elite times.
Over his last two seasons, Miller became a regular special teamer, playing 133 snaps of special teams for Tampa in 2022 and 107 snaps for Atlanta in 2023. He recorded one tackle each season and returned two kickoffs and one punt.
In addition to Miller, the Steelers have also added running back/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson, tight end MyCole Pruitt and wide receiver Van Jefferson from Smith’s 2023 Falcons offense. Smith was fired after Atlanta finished 7-10 for the third straight season.
