UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers had two veterans take part in their practices of training camp since returning from injury on Sunday, but had two more players go down with injuries in practice in Tarik Black and Kalon Barnes.

Running back and kickoff returner Cordarrelle Patterson and defensive tackle Dean Lowry both had their first full practice with the Steelers this training camp. Patterson, who had been recovering from an offseason hamstring injury, was elevated from the non-football injury list on Friday. Lowry, who suffered a right calf injury in OTAs, was removed from the PUP list on Sunday. Both vets worked only in individual portions of practice on Sunday as they get their way back into game shape.

The Steelers suffered a pair of in-practice soft tissue injuries, head coach Mike Tomlin said. Wide receiver Tarik Black left practice with a hamstring injury and cornerback Kalon Barnes could not finish the session after a quad injury.

The Steelers remain without the two players injured in Friday’s preseason-opening loss to the Houston Texans. Defensive lineman Keeanu Benton (eye) and offensive tackle Troy Fautanu (MCL sprain) both did not practice. Tomlin said that Fautanu will miss at least this Saturday’s Week 3 preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

“We’re really optimistic about a quick return from him, but we’ll take it day by day,” Tomlin said. “He was doing really well. Obviously, we wanted to get him a lot of work. Because that’s where he is in development, but I like the general trajectory of it.”

Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith (groin) and wide receiver Roman Wilson (left ankle sprain) both continue to be held out.
Additionally, outside cornerback Donte Jackson got the day off, so the team could get a longer look at second-year players Darius Rush and Cory Trice. Defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal had the day off from team periods.
