Steelers Suffer Two New Injuries at Training Camp

UNITY TWP., Pa. — Two Pittsburgh Steelers suffered noteworthy injuries during the team’s second training camp practice in full pads at St. Vincent College on Wednesday.

Head coach Mike Tomlin broke down the injuries in his post-practice press conference, revealing that defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal suffered an ankle injury and that safety Keanu Neal suffered an undisclosed injury.

Leal was injured late in the day during a pass-rush drill, when he got his left ankle rolled up. He took a seat on the field and missed the end of practice while trainers worked on his ankle, but got back to his feet and suited back up, so it does not appear to be a serious issue. Tomlin called the injury minor.

Tomlin did not disclose Neal’s injury, only saying that he is being evaluated. The Steelers have had a significant playing time crunch at safety, as Minkah Fitzpatrick has been excused for personal reasons and Damontae Kazee has been out with an ankle injury. A Neal absence would leave the Steelers down to No. 3 and 4 safeties Tre Norwood and Kenny Robinson. The team signed safety Trenton Thompson to improve their depth at the position on Wednesday.

Tomlin also mentioned that wide receiver Diontae Johnson was dealing with some “normal bumps and bruises that occur this time of year.” Johnson was apparently hit in the groin after catching a pass in a team period.

Running back John Lovett, who took two bigs hits during the backs on backers drill on Wednesday, did not appear to participate in practice on Thursday. His absence was unexplained and unmentioned by Tomlin.

Linebacker Elandon Roberts, who was unable to finish practice on Tuesday, was a full participant in Wednesday’s action.
